Glossary
Asset: A physical facility, such as a plant or a platform. An asset contains one or more emission sources. See Key concepts.
Batch run: A recalculation of a past period. A pipeline batch run recalculates the first-level data. An STA batch run recalculates the short-term and long-term averages.
Calibration: The adjustment of a model or an instrument against reference measurements. The product records which calibration was active for each period.
CEMS: Continuous emission monitoring system. A system that measures emission concentrations directly with analyzers in the exhaust gas. Compare with PEMS.
Combined: The fuel mode that covers the whole operating period, whatever the fuel. Compare with fuel mode.
Composed report: A report document that arranges values from report templates into sections, tables, charts and text. See Composed reports.
Conversion mode: The setting of a report column that tells how the product converts and aggregates a value. Examples are a mass sum, a mass flow and a concentration average.
DAHS: Data acquisition and handling system. The software that collects the measured or calculated values and forms the averages and reports. EN 17255-1 specifies such systems.
ELV (emission limit value): The maximum emission that the permit allows for a pollutant over a defined period, for example one hour or one day. See Reporting periods and emission limits.
Emission source: One piece of equipment that emits, for example a gas turbine, a boiler, an engine or a flare. Each emission source has its own tags, model and pipeline.
First-level data (FLD): The per-minute record that a pipeline run writes. It holds the value and the quality of every tag of the emission source for that minute.
Fuel mode: The fuel population of an average. Gas and Liquid contain only the minutes with that fuel alone. Combined contains all operating minutes.
Gross error: A measurement that disagrees with the mass and energy balances by more than its uncertainty can explain. A first-principle pipeline can test for gross errors.
LTA (long-term average): An average over a long period, such as a day, a month or a year. The daily LTA is the mean of the valid hourly VSTA values.
Model: The calculation that produces emission values from process inputs. The product supports first-principle, machine learning (ONNX), custom and simple models. See How emissions are calculated.
Model integrity test (MIT): A test that sends a fixed input data set through a pipeline. It compares the outputs with expected values within a tolerance.
Operating condition: A named set of criteria, such as fuel, load or plant status. All criteria must be true. Emission limits and the OTNOC counter use operating conditions.
OTNOC: Other than normal operating conditions, such as start-up, shut-down or partial load. The product counts OTNOC hours from the operating conditions that you assign to an emission source.
PEMS: Predictive emission monitoring system. A system that calculates emissions from process measurements with a model, instead of measuring them with analyzers. WS.PEMS is a PEMS.
Pipeline: The ordered list of steps that the product runs for an emission source, normally once per minute. The steps read and validate the data, run the model and write the results. An asset pipeline coordinates the pipelines of several emission sources.
Quality: A code that the product stores with each value. It tells if the value is good, substituted, missing, invalid or from a period when the plant was not in reportable mode.
RATA: Relative accuracy test audit. A test that compares the results of the monitoring system with parallel reference measurements. The product supports it with the validation workflow.
Reconciliation: The adjustment of measured values within their uncertainty, so that the mass and energy balances of a first-principle model agree.
Regime: The set of regulatory rules for reporting: the averaging intervals, the uncertainty deduction method, the validity thresholds and the operating conditions.
Region: A grouping of assets, for example a country or a business unit. Users see only the data of the regions that they have access to.
Report template: The definition of the columns and named results of a report: which tags, which averaging level, which fuel mode and which unit.
Reportable mode: The plant states in which the permit applies. Periods outside reportable mode get the quality "plant not in reportable mode" and do not count as invalid.
SSTA (standardized short-term average): The STA concentration converted to the reference oxygen content of the permit.
STA (short-term average): The average of the per-minute values over a short interval, normally one hour.
Standard tag: A template that defines what a measurement means, for example "NOx concentration". The same standard tag gives the same meaning on every emission source.
Substitute value: A value that replaces a missing or out-of-range measurement, for example the last good value. The product marks it with the quality "substitute value used".
Tag: One data point of an emission source, such as a measured signal or a calculated output.
VSTA (validated short-term average): The SSTA minus the measurement uncertainty. It is the value that the product compares with the emission limit.
